Topographic amnesia refers to the act of forgetting one’s surroundings through automatism. The concept of the flâneur engages with the experience of the urban environment; the installation interrupts the flow of passersby, expanding perception through reflection and prompting the observer to become aware of the site.
In doing so, the viewer begins to perceive the layered histories that coexist there: on one side, the church and its Black community; on the other, the erasure brought by the arrival of the Japanese population. The mirror operates as a faithful reflection of what is present, resisting the distortions of image that characterize the contemporary world — shaped by the ongoing metamorphosis of perception.
